Historically, BMW has often marked the spirits by the rupture during the renewal of some of its models. We had seen it in particular with the Series 7 of 2001, then that of 2022. Today, it is with the Series 5 that there is talk of a rupture and double moreover. Freshly unveiled, the “5”, eighth of the name, first embodies a mechanical breakthrough by adopting a 100% electric motor for the first time.
Above all, it operates a major stylistic change by sporting a unique and different look from its predecessor. If we recognize the famous “double bean” of the grille, we note new headlights which, in addition to their atypical shape, integrate two vertical LED elements serving both as daytime running lights and indicators. This German will especially surprise by its posterior, marked by a less horizontal trunk and lights with diode strips mounted in parallel.
Moreover, this new Series 5 is much higher and more elongated, culminating at 1.51 meters and stretching to 5.06m! And for good reason, this architecture was designed by Munich engineers to be “electro-compatible”. Understand by this that the great Bavarian can now accommodate in its bowels a carpet of batteries capable of animating a 100% electric block and above all offer it a good autonomy.
More techno and now electro
For the interior, the designers of the “5” were mainly inspired by the cockpits of the SUV iX and the 7 Series. We therefore find a double curved slab and composed of a 12.3 ” screen for the instrumentation , adjoining another 14.9” dedicated to multimedia. It is also an entirely vegan interior with natural, recycled upholstery and leather-like properties.
Among the high-tech “treats” on offer are the augmented reality head-up display, remote parking or the “BMW Natural Interaction” option, which allows functions to be controlled just by gestures!
It is to believe that it would take a “bac + 19” to pilot this road plane. This is false and in particular thanks to a good dose of artificial intelligence. The “5” is overflowing with driver assistance systems including the new Highway Assist and Active Lane Change Assist. The latter is an active lane change assistant that is activated just by looking at the eyes, towards the exterior mirror. Revolutionary ! The great technical novelty is under the hood with, for the first time, a 100% electric block on the two versions of the i5 (340 and 601 hp), whose announced autonomy ranges from 455 to 582 km.
Of course, the 4-cylinder petrol (520i/208 hp) and diesel (520d/197 hp) remain in the catalog, all equipped with mild hybridization, while a new six-cylinder diesel and hybrid-rechargeable petrol versions will be launched. in 2024.
