After a long illness journey experienced by the late artist Abdel Halim Hafez, he returned from London in March 1977, carried on his shoulders.
His body arrived at Cairo airport at three in the morning, on an Egyptian plane, with Mrs. Nahla al-Qudsi, lawyer Magdi al-Amrousy, Abdel Halim Alia Shabana’s sister, and her cousin Shehata on board.
The body was received at the airport by Nightingale’s brothers Ismail and Muhammad Shabana, and a large number of artists, led by Baligh Hamdi. The body of the late was scheduled to be transferred to Maadi Hospital, and from there in the morning to the Omar Makram Mosque.
This measure was shortened, as Sheikh Al-Shaarawy, the Minister of Endowments at the time, ordered the mosque to be opened throughout the night so that the body might lie in it.
Special arrangements were made for the funeral of Abdel Halim to his final resting place, and at exactly eleven o’clock, some artists carried the coffin of the deceased from inside the mosque following the prayer was performed on him.
The car was one of the first movie like it to the cinema, which is “The Melody of Loyalty.” The coffin was wrapped in silver silk and wrapped in the Egyptian flag.
Security Tightening Within an intense security department, Nightingale’s funeral proceeded step by step from the Omar Makram Mosque, to Tahrir Square, to the Sharkas Mosque, and human waves were trying to penetrate the circle to reach the coffin, but all attempts were met with deterrence.
In this circle, the funeral procession continued in the designated streets, amid the sounds of women’s wailing and the nervous emotions of hundreds of thousands of young men.
At the forefront of the mourners was Mr. Ezz El-Din Jalal, a deputy for former President Anwar El-Sadat, and Mr. Mamdouh Salem, the Prime Minister and Ministers, in addition to a large number of Arab ambassadors.
Immediately behind the ministers were a number of artists whose voices mingled with sobs of crying, including Baligh Hamdi, Muhammad al-Muji, Muhammad Sultan, as well as director Hussein Kamal, Hassan al-Imam, and lawyer for the deceased Magdi al-Amrousy.
As for the musician, Mohamed Abdel-Wahhab, he failed to walk behind the coffin by order of the doctors because of the shock he suffered upon hearing the news.
And Nadia Lotfi was the only artist who challenged everyone and participated in the funeral, despite the request of the deceased’s family that the artists not participate, so as not to be subjected to crowds of fans during the funeral procession.
In front of the Sharkas Mosque, the green car set off with Abdel Halim’s coffin to the orchards area, following he bid farewell to the tears of millions.
Abdel Halim was buried in a cemetery he bought his land 17 years ago and did not approve of its construction until 45 days before his death.
