The return of Easter excursions is peaking 2024-05-08 11:48:26

Today, Tuesday 7/5, all those who left during Holy Week to spend the Easter days away from the capital are returning to Athens by car, bus, ship and plane.

Early in the followingnoon, the first problems began to appear on the country’s road network, especially on the National Highways, with increased traffic and delays in some places. The biggest problem is found in Athens-Corinth, upstream to Athens, especially following Corinth.

In Athens-Lamia the situation is better, however there is congestion at the tolls at the height of Thebes.

The Traffic Police estimate that as time passes, the traffic will increase and is expected to ease up late in the evening. According to the traffic data, from 6 am yesterday to 6 am today, a total of 112,975 cars passed through both national networks (65,756 from Athens-Corinth and 47,219 from Athens-Lamia).

Additionally, from 6 am today to 12 noon, 15,985 vehicles returned to Attica via Athens-Corinth and 7,926 from Athens-Lamia. It is reminded that until 23:00 today a ban on the movement of lorries with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tons applies to the entrance stream.

According to the Traffic Police, this year’s excursionists who left by car, bus, ship or plane constituted the largest exodus in the post-pandemic era. About 700,000 vehicles left Attica during Holy Week alone.

In particular, from Palm Sunday (26/04) until Good Friday (03/05) a total of 618,577 vehicles passed through the Elefsina and Afidna tolls.

Corresponding movement was of course also observed in the ports. According to the reservation system of the ferry companies, at least 24,284 passengers and 3,348 vehicles departed from the port of Piraeus, while 9,770 passengers and 2,015 vehicles departed from the port of Rafina. The most popular destinations according to the ferry companies were the Cyclades, the Argosaronic islands and destinations in the Northern Aegean.

Fullness that reached 100% was also observed on KTEL buses for routes in areas such as Peloponnese, Aitoloakarnania, Epirus and Thessaly.

In the same pattern, of course, is the traffic at Athens International Airport, with aircraft leaving with very high occupancy both on the domestic network and on the international network.

The gradual return started yesterday, as there was increased traffic at the Elefsina toll road, with most of them, however, looking like they will take advantage of their leave and return today.

It is indicative that by yesterday followingnoon only 5,000 vehicles had returned.

However, those who decided to stay in the capital for Easter also took advantage of the good weather, filling cafes and the nearby beaches. The slight rise in temperature and the sunshine was the ideal combination for them to take their first dives. Many beaches in Attica, including that of Flisvos, were filled with bathers, as the temperature reached up to 26 degrees Celsius.
