Why is women’s pain minimized? This is one of the questions the podcast attempts to answer. The Retrievals of New York Times.
A series of five episodes created by the producers of the mythical podcast Serial.
It addresses a delicate, difficult, but important subject: the ignorance of pain in women.
The listener is immersed in the story, narrated by activist Susan Burton, who we follow as she investigates the events that took place at Yale University in 2020, within their renowned fertility clinic.
The Retrievals depicts these women who recount having experienced excruciating pain during egg retrieval, one of the first stages of in vitro fertilization.
From the first minutes, the testimonies are overwhelming.
During this procedure, women are sedated and given fentanyl to prevent pain. They are told that they will feel a slight pressure, nothing more.
However, all of these patients end up in tears, in intense pain once on the table. All indicate that the medication is not working. Some lose their breath, return home in pain, unable to walk.
One of the women says:
“When they started the procedure, I was taken by surprise. I did not expect such excruciating pain. I let them know that the medicine was not working. I felt like they were stabbing me from the inside with the needle.”
Over the weeks, these women talk to nurses, doctors and their families regarding how much the procedure is causing them pain.
The doctors are not worried. Nothing is done.
They are the ones who are too sensitive. That’s all.
After months of waiting, they finally discover the truth regarding the reasons for their suffering.
A nurse at the clinic would steal the fentanyl and replace it with saline water.
All of the procedures on these dozens of women were performed without analgesia.
he balladed The Retrievals immerses you in the stories of dozens of women who have all suffered from their time at Yale Fertility Center.
