The European Football Association (UEFA) has decided to conduct the Champions League draw for the new season by computer, instead of using former stars, in light of the increase in the number of teams from 32 to 36 clubs.
According to the new system, each team will play 8 matches in the group stage instead of 6, and they will be ranked according to the league system.
The European Union justified resorting to the electronic draw, to avoid using nearly 1,000 balls in the draw, which would make its activities very boring.
The 36 teams participating in the new version of the Champions League were divided into 4 pots (9 teams in each level), according to the latest European Union classification, with the exception of Real Madrid, the Spanish team, as the title holder of the tournament, which is placed in the first pot.
Level 1:
Real Madrid – Manchester City – Bayern Munich – Paris Saint-Germain – Liverpool – Inter Milan – Borussia Dortmund – Leipzig – Barcelona.
Level 2:
Bayer Leverkusen – Atletico Madrid – Atalanta – Juventus – Benfica – Arsenal – Club Brugge – Shakhtar – Milan.
Level 3:
Feyenoord – Sporting Lisbon – PSV – Dinamo Zagreb – Salzburg – Young Boys – Celtic – Red Star – Lille.
Level 4:
Monaco – Sparta Prague – Aston Villa – Bologna – Girona – Stuttgart – Brest – Sturm Graz – Slovan Bratislava.
After that, two opponents are selected for each team from each pot (for a total of 8 opponents), one of which will be played at home and one away.
Initially, traditional balls were used, and then the computer will take over, given the complexities of the draw, which prevents more than two teams from the same country from being in one group, while they can meet against two teams from another country at most.
The same procedure will be followed for the draw for the Europa League and Conference League on August 30.
