The Republic, with an advantage –

The Republic of Mexico already has half a championship under its belt.

An early goal by Alexander Balam gave the Centro Universitario República de México team a hard-fought victory by the minimum difference over the Venados del CUM Marista, in the first leg of the grand final of the Liga Premier de Primera Fuerza.

In an atmosphere rarely seen before, with people all around the Marista University pitch, the Republicans went out looking to do damage from early on and they achieved this with Balam’s goal, scored after 7 minutes of action.

But the home team paid dearly for the defeat, and although they tried, they were unable to overcome the obstacle of the team led by Israel Montejo. The early goal weighed on the Cumistas, despite the efforts of José Elías Alam’s team.

Both teams had opportunities to score, but their forwards and goalkeepers prevented them. The referee was Jonathan Echeverría, who did an acceptable job.

The return leg will be played on Saturday 13th at 5pm at the “Carlos Iturralde Rivero” Olympic Stadium, where last year the Republic completed its work to rise to the Premier League throne for the first time.— Gaspar Silveira
