The removal of metal garages continues in Šnipiškės, and a kindergarten will appear on the territory

The removal of the garages started after UAB “Grindai” removed the first garages and installed a convenient exit. Then some of the garages were taken away by the owners themselves. Others are removed and transported by Grinda UAB.

“In the city of Vilnius, and especially in densely populated areas, there is a great shortage of free land for kindergartens and schools. The sooner this territory is vacated, the sooner a kindergarten will be able to appear here, so we urge the residents to hurry up and remove their property,” said Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

Removal of garages is carried out by court-appointed decision with the participation of the bailiff. Still in 2020 The order of the Administration Director of the Vilnius City Municipality obliged all owners of metal garages located on state land in the city of Vilnius to evict these structures by 2020. December 31 and vacate occupied state land.

Many residents of the city moved their garages in good faith, but the Kernavė garage community ignored the requests. She did not reveal the real owners for a long time, later she said that she would oblige them to remove the garages by the end of the summer of this year. When the community failed to do so, the court allowed the municipality itself to remove these garages.

There were 179 metal garages on Kernavė Street. They occupied a plot of about 63 acres, which would accommodate the entire kindergarten, and there would also be room for a sports playground. The metal garages and the property in them will be temporarily protected by Grinda UAB. To reclaim the property, people will be able to approach the company if they can prove that it is their property with the available documents. The property will later be turned over to waste managers.

Over the course of three years, almost 9,000 metal garages were removed in Vilnius – this is more than 80 percent. of all garages that stood on state-owned city land. All temporary metal garages cover an area of about 50 hectares. After removing the garages, the environment is improved, green spaces are designed on the plots, the residents need infrastructure, such as kindergartens and schools.

Metal garages in Vilnius and other cities of Lithuania began to be built in the Soviet era. Then these garages were allowed to settle on state land temporarily – for 3-5 years. However, the garages that remained standing on the state territory for decades eventually became landfills and began to pose a threat to the environment and essentially made it difficult to use state land for public interests.
