26-year-old Oleksandr Badko in 2022 and his battalion were trying to push back Russian forces from northeastern Kharkiv when a shell exploded near him, seriously injuring him.
Eventually, he lost his legs but that didn’t stop him from being named the most desirable bachelor in Ukraine. Today the young veteran stars in the Ukrainian version of The Bachelor, where dozens of women are vying for his heart.
Speaking to the BBC, he said he hopes to find love on the show after splitting from his partner last January – but believes it will be difficult to choose a partner with “millions of people watching”.
His motives are not only romantic. He also wants to use the show to raise public awareness of the difficulties faced by people with disabilities. “Millions of people watch the show and it’s a huge opportunity to positively influence their perspectives,” he believes.

He pointed out that through his participation he wants to show that wounded veterans “are not outsiders, but full members of society who can live a good life. In my own case, my life is now better than before.”
His life wasn’t always like this. Before the war started, he worked as a barista in a restaurant in Kiev and at the same time studied Graphic Design. As he says his dreams were “down to earth”: traveling, discovering the world and professional development. He also wanted to start a family. Eventually, everything changed when he became one of the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who enlisted in the army.
Speaking about his injury, he said “I felt the earth shift on top of me. I felt a terrible pain in my legs and realized that this would mean the amputation of my legs. I screamed from the horrible pain and cried out to be heard.”

His comrades who were alive, dug him out of the ground and gave him first aid. “I realized I had lost my legs at the time of the injury, two or three seconds after I felt the pain.”
His recovery was difficult, but within six months he was able to walk with prosthetic legs. “When I didn’t have prosthetic legs, I had to get around in a wheelchair. I discovered how inaccessible and unsuitable Kyiv was for wheelchair users, despite being the capital city,” he commented.
