Each year, nearly 15 million children worldwide are born prematurely (at less than 37 weeks’ gestation) and more than 20 million newborns have low birth weight, according to numbers of the World Health Organization. These indicators are generally associated with various health problems, such as hypertension and neurodevelopmental disorders during childhood, as well as an increased probability of presenting cardiometabolic diseases (diabetes, stroke, infarction, etc.) adulthood.
