Strategic positioning

The rehabilitation and redevelopment project of the slipper market in Tangier is in the process of becoming a reality. Led by the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN), this project is the subject of a call for tenders for the choice of a service provider in charge of the stages of its implementation, according to a pre-established schedule. It helps the slipper market to reorganize and reintegrate into the urban economic fabric of the old city. Highly anticipated, this project, which requires an overall investment of more than 13.7 million dirhams, is part of the framework of the royal program for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the medina of Tangier.

A period of six months
In addition, the slipper market is one of the main buildings within and outside the city walls located in the city center and intended to be fully renovated and refurbished as part of this ambitious royal program. Thanks to this new project, it will have to resume its role as one of the most dynamic commercial spaces in the city.

It will have to be completely rehabilitated and refitted to be delivered within six months of the start of construction work on this project. Like the other neighboring intra and extra muros commercial sites, carried out within the framework of this program and already operational, these works essentially ensure the demolition of all the shops in the slipper market and the installation of new modern ones. well suited to its commercial vocation and the traditional aspect of its space. It is also planned to upgrade the distribution networks of drinking water, electricity and the liquid sanitation service of this economic structure, which is in a dilapidated state.

The objective of this project is to breathe new life into the slipper market, which benefits from a strategic position near the Sidi Bouabid mosque (built in 1917) and a few steps from the famous Place du 9 Avril (named in commemoration of the visit made in 1947 by the late HM King Mohammed V to Tangier). This project will allow this market, which also sits proudly with other historic buildings such as the Mendoubia, the Grand Hotel Villa de France and the Cinémathèque de Tanger (better known to Tangiers by the Rif cinema), to help promote the attractiveness of this famous historical place considered among the most dynamic and the most frequented by tourists.

It should be remembered that among the commercial and historical sites rehabilitated within the framework of the royal program, it is worth mentioning the Fendaq Chejra market and its surroundings, which have just been redeveloped, thanks to a budget of 29.2 million dirhams. and enhanced with a view to better reintegrating them into the economic fabric of the old town.
