The president of the Madrid region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, urged the Spanish government on Monday, September 2, to open the Spanish embassy in Caracas to Edmundo Gonzalezto give him asylum.
“Spain should open the doors of the Embassy today to protect this man, because they are going to kill him or arrest him and they are not going to release him. And they are doing it with the relatives and the entourage of the winners of the elections, who are not the opposition, but the government elected by the people of Venezuela,” Díaz Ayuso said in an interview with the television network Antenna 3.
Along those lines, he pointed out that González should be granted asylum in any of the embassies of European countries, as well as the United States, or all the nations on the American continent “that say they are shocked by what is happening.”
For the Madrid leader of the Popular Party (PP), any democratic country, mainly Spain, due to its “exceptional commitment to this country (Venezuela)”, should “at this very moment, give shelter to this man who is being persecuted”.
Díaz Ayuso called on Pedro Sánchez’s government not to “look the other way.” She denounced that after the presidential elections there have been “murders, kidnappings and persecutions” by state security agencies.
The time for requesting electoral records is over
According to the president of the Madrid region, “the time has run out” for requesting the electoral records of the July 28 elections in Venezuela.
Ayuso was one of the Spanish political figures who participated in the global rally organized on August 18 by the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), which brought together some 15,000 people in Puerta del Sol square in the Spanish capital, and in which the president of the Madrid region demanded that Sánchez put himself “at the head” of the demand for transparency and freedom in Venezuela.
Venezuela is in a political crisis following the controversial presidential elections of July 28, a period during which the majority opposition has denounced that there was “fraud”, and numerous organizations inside and outside the country have warned of an increase in “persecution” against opposition leaders.
According to the executive, more than 2,400 people have been arrested since July 29 – some in demonstrations and others in police operations – and 25 were killed in acts of violence that the government attributes to the opposition, while the latter point to the State security forces.
Venezuelan prosecutor summoned Edmundo González three times
On August 28, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office summoned Edmundo González for the third time to testify on August 29, amid several investigations against him related to allegations of electoral fraud in the July 28 presidential elections.
The government agency warned that if he does not attend the summons again on the indicated date, an arrest warrant would be issued against him, considering that he is “in danger of fleeing.”
González’s first summons was scheduled for August 26 and the second summons was given on August 27.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation is related to alleged crimes of usurpation of functions, forgery of public documents, instigation to disobedience of laws, computer crimes, criminal association and conspiracy, which carry sentences of up to 16 years in prison.
Opposition denounced judicial harassment against Edmundo González
On August 27, the PUD reported judicial harassment against González by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, due to repeated summons in the context of various investigations against him.
In this regard, the opposition coalition expressed its support for González and confirmed that he “won overwhelmingly in the last presidential election on July 28.”
“(Edmundo) is being persecuted because the government considers it a crime that he obtained no less than eight million votes by the will of the Venezuelan people,” added the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) in a post on the social network X.
On August 25, González stated that the Public Ministry “intends to subject him to an interview without specifying under what condition he is expected to appear.”
