Two-time world champion in the USSR national hockey team Alexander Martynyuk died at the age of 78 following a long illness, according to the website of the Moscow “Spartak”.
Martynyuk is a participant in the super series between the national teams of the USSR and Canada in 1972, world champion in 1971 and 1973, three-time champion of the USSR with Spartak. Played in the same trio with Vladimir Shadrin and Alexander Yakushev.
In 1973, the striker set a domestic hockey record by scoring eight goals in a World Championship match with the German national team (18:2).
“Until the last years of his life, even following 70 years, Alexander Akimovich did not part with his favorite game, going on the ice in matches for veterans of Spartak and USSR Hockey Legends,” the message says.
Martynyuk also played for Wings of the Soviets (1963–1965) and Austrian Kapfenberg (1977–1980) throughout his career.
Martynyuk played 410 matches in the national championship and scored 212 goals, including 197 in the “red-white”.
