The Reconstruction of the Huy Cable Car: Complete and Ready to Transport Tourists in April

The reconstruction of the Huy cable car, damaged by a helicopter accident in 2012, is almost complete. It will transport tourists once more when the next season opens in April. With no response to its call for a private manager, the City of Huy chose to take charge. Besides, she had little choice. A lack of anticipation was noted by the opposition at the municipal council on Monday evening. “The operation of the cable car will cost the Hutois thousands of euros, following the 15 million invested for the work”insisted the ecologist Rodrigue Demeuse, while the City, until recently, considered that ensuring the management of the cable car itself, “it was the worst option”. And he adds: “the Hutois will pay three times more”. Because there will be insurance, approval, upkeep, maintenance, the cost of electricity and that of personnel.

Hey, speaking of the cost of management… How much will managing the cable car cost the City of Huy as manager? “If you haven’t calculated it, you’re kidding the Hutois”, commented Grégory Vidal (DéfiPourHuy). Figures, Jacques Mouton, alderman of Finance, has but “I do not intend to give them to you precisely because I do not want to lock myself into a straightjacket. The municipal services are in the process of refining the figures.” Without the cable car, the fort has 18,000 entries per year and Mount Mosan has 90,000. “We can imagine that 35% more people will go with the cable car. There will also be revenue from the brewery, bicycle rental, and the drinks point provided at the fort.” And to add: “We will have more precise figures in a month.”

The alderman nevertheless recalls that since the accident in 2012, all political groups had agreed to put the cable car back on the road. The construction site has been launched, “we must complete it today and it is not the fault of the service provider or the City if the various crises have caused the cost of the work to be boosted”. The college has always wanted to favor the private operator but if it had a potentially interested candidate when it relaunched its offer in September, it no longer has one today.

Opposition reaction: “It’s even more amateurish than we thought. All because you didn’t think regarding management sooner, it’s just astonishing.” Acting Mayor Éric Dosogne, however, affirms that nothing will be left to chance, and clearly not the safety of cable car passengers. “There will be monthly, quarterly and annual checks.” And in any case, the City still hopes to find a private manager.
