The biggest names in Quebec cinema can rest assured. Newly appointed general director, Hugo Latulippe has already begun the work of restoring the nobility of the Quebec City Cinema Festival, which took off for a 12th year on Wednesday.

For the first time since 2019, Place d’Youville will be the heart of the event. The popular open-air cinema formula is back, and the stars of Quebec films Solo et Simple like Sylvain will parade on a long red carpet which will take them from the Palais Montcalm to the Théâtre Le Diamant.

There will be master classes, evening parties and the first presentation of an award for the most popular film of the event, named in honor of the late filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée.

The assets of Quebec

“Quebec deserves a major film festival,” trumpets Hugo Latulippe, who has set himself the goal of making the FCVQ a national event.

Taking a look at Old Quebec, he affirms that the capital has all the assets to make his wish come true.

“When I say that with its flamboyant landscape, this city has everything to host a major film festival, people from Quebec often tell me to let them go with the postcard, but what is cinema? It is a quest for beauty, for aesthetics. »

« Rebooter the FCVQs »

In office only since April, the general director of the FCVQ has not yet had time to set in motion the work he considers necessary to adapt the event, which takes place over only five days, to his vision.

“In the fall, we’re going to do a hang-out with FCVQ alumni, people who know about international festivals. We go rebooter the festival. This year, it’s a version in the FCVQ tradition with a little punch from Hugo Latulippe, but afterward, we’re going to think and wonder what a 2024 festival should look like.”

Already, he is talking about decentralization which will result in events in the city’s districts, in schools, all year round.

His big dream? “Let the people of Quebec make it their own. »

“This organization belongs to everyone. Most of the money is public. We have a responsibility to make cinema accessible to all. »
