The project was announced in November last year, and the car is now complete: design icon Giorgetto Giugiaro and his company GFG Style completely rebuilt a 1974 concept car in record time. The model stands on a contemporary chassis and is fully functional.
The original Hyundai Pony Coupe was presented at the same time as the sedan, which then went into series production and was also sold in some European markets – but not in Germany. The coupé was part of a series of futuristic Giugiaro studies that had a major influence on international automotive design at the time.
Hyundai worked for years to bring the model into series production, but the project was canceled in 1981. The prototypes disappeared – a circumstance that the design department did not want to accept. And therefore contacted Giugiaro to recreate the original model.
The now completed Pony Coupé Concept, shown at an exclusive presentation on Lake Como, was built using the methods and processes of the 1970s; Giugiaro delved deep into the archives, drawing on the expertise of collaborators at the time to achieve 100 percent fidelity to the original. In this respect, it is also an industrial-historical project with a scientific claim.
“The rebirth of the Pony Coupé Concept is a significant milestone in the history of Hyundai Motor because it symbolizes not only our beginnings but also our commitment to the future with our new dreams,” said Hyundai Chief Designer Sangyup Lee. And Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, describes the model as a “legacy for future generations”.
The fascination of the perfectly crafted model was clearly felt at the vehicle’s debut – and when the engine was started, spontaneous applause erupted. Because under the hood is of course no electric drive, but a four-cylinder petrol engine, which makes itself felt with an amazingly sporty sound. (awm)
