The Reality of British Tennis: Jamie Murray Joins Dan Evans in Criticizing the State of the Game

Jamie Murray agrees with Dan Evans that British tennis is not in its best shape and that Emma Raducanu’s victory at the US Open in 2021 has only ‘closed the cracksof British tennis.

At Roland Garros, Dan Evans has criticized the state of British tennis following only three men (and no British women) reached the main draw at Roland Garros. Additionally, Britain has no WTA players ranked in the top 100 in the world.

Regarding the state of British tennis, Evans suggested that Raducanu’s 2021 Grand Slam victory made British tennis look better than it actually was.

“Evo is probably right. Emma has had these crazy two weeks out of nowhere, but that’s not the reality of the situation we find ourselves in. Something has to change,” Murray said, via Express -Sport.

Murray agrees with Evans on Raducanu’s Slam win.

Historically, Britain has had many great players and champions. Over the past 11 years, Andy Murray has helped Great Britain win three Grand Slam tournaments.

On the women’s circuit, Raducanu became the first Briton since Virginia Wade in 1977 to win a Grand Slam. “It’s a question of numbers at this level. There are decades or more of what I would call underperformance.

We’ve had Andy at the top for a long time. This will soon end. Dan Evans and Cam Norrie are obviously well established on the Tour and Jack Draper is ramping up. On the girl side, it’s not like we’ve always had people in the top 10, 20 or 30.

It’s just a matter of situation. I just think there’s no reason not to have 10 or 15 players, male and female, in the main draw and qualifiers for this tournament. We rejoice when we have two or three players, which is unacceptable.

As a Grand Slam nation, we cannot afford to show up to these events with such a small number of players competing. With the funds some players have, we should do better,” Murray said.
