(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Dongchan Kim = Women’s Professional Tennis (WTA) singles world ranking 38th place Sorana Crstea (32, Romania) criticized the reality that considers appearance more important than player skill.
Eurosport introduced the remarks made by Krstea on an Internet broadcast recently on the 1st.
Krstea appeared on a podcast in Romania and said, “When I signed a contract with a sponsor a few years ago, I was told, ‘It’s better to be pretty and be number 20 in the world than ugly and be number one in the world’.”
Krstea climbed to No. 21 in the world rankings in 2013 and is a two-time WTA Tour singles champion. In her major competition, she achieved her best performance in the 2009 French Open quarterfinals.
Krstea, which has been sponsored by Adidas for 10 years since 2006, has now signed a sponsorship contract with New Balance.
Krstea said that she heard this remark regarding her appearance when she signed with Adidas.
The British newspaper Express also reported on Krstea’s words and said, “I inquired regarding the relevant information to Adidas, but did not get an answer.”
At the time of the contract, Krstea was told by a sponsor that “If you are in the top 20, you can participate in any competition and you will be exposed 24 hours a day (advertisements, etc.)”.
He added, “It’s all because of marketing,” he added.
Krstea won the WTA Tour singles twice, including the Tashkent Open in 2008 and the Istanbul Cup in 2021, and earned $7475,507 (regarding 10.65 billion won) in total prize money.
He also participated in the Korean Open on the WTA Tour in 2009 and 2017.
