Before receiving it on the radio, I went to see Sabine in her office in St Georges. In the middle of the ironing workshop, the workers tell me all the good things they think of their boss. I tease them saying that they must have been paid to say it in front of me. The ambiance is good. Sabine is laughing but you can directly feel her stature. Her past as a housekeeper for a cardiologist and for other clients gives her, it’s true, real expertise.
I take advantage of my visit to her home, and of her presence in the Bel-RTL studio, to speak to her frankly. What is the real salary? “A housekeeper earns almost 2,000 euros full-time. I also issue meal vouchers and reimburse kilometers. I often hear it said that you only earn 1,000 euros in this job, it’s true, but then it’s probably part-time”.
Of course, not everyone earns 2,000 euros, but the interest of letting go of the figure is the revaluation of the profession. I point out to Sabine, we often talk regarding these workers by denigrating their profession. We might also, with supporting figures, recall that this is not a sub-business that is systematically underpaid.
The difficulty of this job? Juggling sick leave. “One of my workers has been on leave for more than 3 years, but I also have a 65-year-old employee who is still working”.
Before closing the interview, I ask Sabine how many shirts she can iron for a service voucher? “For you I will do less, because you have bigger shirts, it takes more time”. Damned…and to say that I had found her nice so far.
