Tim Cain, co-creator of the original Fallout in 1997, reveals the real reason for creating Vaults.
In a new episode of his YouTube series “Cain of the Game,” Cain explains that the Vault wasn’t originally there to ensure that humans might repopulate Earth. When designing shelters,“The head of the Enclave and the highest levels of government are like ‘Let’s build a starship and take it to the nearby stars. But it takes a long time, so it has to be a multigenerational starship, and the only technology we know how to build is atomic power. So we might make an atomic power plant that would help us build a starship for hundreds of years, but we don’t know how. So the director of Vault-Tec, not a great guy, said, “Why don’t we use the vault to figure out what technology we need on board?”
So, as you might have guessed from playing the game, each Vault was not only designed to keep people alive, but it was also created to test a different experimental technology that might help humanity colonize the stars.

“I’ve always thought of making the Vault of Sanctuary in Fallout 2 a control vault,”Cain continued.“It’s designed to get everything right. It gives Vault-Tec a purpose beyond just ‘let’s save some of the American population and release them to replay the radioactive dead zone’. It doesn’t make any sense Thing. Making the vault a technology test bed with the goal of building a multi-generational starship that would take our best and brightest off Earth in the event of a nuclear war – makes sense.
What do you think of the real reason for creating a vault in Fallout?
