The Range Rover Sport gets a makeover

Long before l’Evoque then the Velar, the Range Rover Sport began in 2005 the extension of the Range Rover family. And like the rest of the siblings, his turn has come to renew himself. Just unveiled, the third version takes more or less the recipe of the previous one. Derived from “Classic” Range Roverit differs from it by a lower size (10 cm less in length, at 4.94 m) and a more dynamic silhouette with reduced height and plunging roof line.

And if some details (such as the horizontal rear lights and the side scoops) are specific to it, the family resemblance remains obvious with the big brother: we find the same refined projectors, the same flush door handles and the same rib running the along the flanks.

Ditto inside: apart from the lowered driving position and specific skins, we are on familiar ground. The sleek dashboard incorporates a digital instrument cluster and a large floating central screen, while the finish gives pride of place to noble materials such as leather, wood, aluminum and ceramic.

In this debauchery of luxury, the ecological fiber is still represented by textiles made from recycled plastics. In addition to the multiple driving aids, the equipment includes some new features, including a noise reduction audio system and a nanoparticle air purifier. On the other hand, the third row of seats (with which the current version is equipped) is no longer relevant, the role of carrier now being devolved to the big brother and its 7 seats.

Sporty, but still adventurous

Promised by Land Rover as the sportiest SUV in its class, the new “Range Sport” does not deny its adventurer pedigree. As a result, it is equipped with a technical range optimizing its versatility: electronically controlled suspension and rear-wheel steering for dynamism; all-wheel drive, air damping and Terrain Response 2 traction management system for off-road talents.

And when it comes to engines, there’s something for everyone. The menu gives the choice between Diesel blocks (250, 300 and 350 hp), gasoline (360 and 400 hp) and plug-in hybrids (440 and 510 hp). The top of the range will be provided by the 530 hp V8 Supercharged, pending an even more muscular SVR version. As for the essential 100% electric variant, it is officially announced for 2024.

Rival of the Porsche Cayenne, the BMW X6 and the Mercedes GLE Coupé, the third generation of Range Rover Sport will be marketed next fall, for prices significantly lower than that of the classic Range Rover… but significantly higher than that of the current one.
