The Norwegian film The Quake, directed by John Andreas Andersen, is the sequel to the hit 2015 film, The Wave. It was launched on the big screen in 2018, but it has just entered streaming, where it has quickly gone on to lead nothing less than the Top 10 of the video platform. The plot follows geologist Kristian, played by Kristoffer Joner, a man who tries to warn regarding a seismic disaster in Oslo, the capital of Norway. Kristian is still traumatized by the events of the first installment and his marriage to Idun, played by Ane Dahl Torp, is in crisis. Likewise, the cast also features Jonas Hoff Oftebro as Sondre and Edith Haagenrud-Sande as Julia, Kristian’s children.

Kristian’s main goal is quite clear: convince the authorities regarding an imminent earthquake, but his warnings are ignored and the consequences are serious even for the most innocent. The film is notable for being more cerebral and less reliant on CGI effects compared to other disaster films. Although it does not feature Hollywood actors, it offers visceral thrills for those willing to explore beyond the typical disaster movies.

It was distributed by Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing and was released in Norway on August 31, arriving in the United States on December 14 of the same year. The screenplay was written by John Kare Raake and Harald Rosevlov Eeg, who also wrote The Last Wave. Cinematography was by John Christian Rosenlund, and editing was done by Christian Siebenherz. Before reaching the red “N”, it was available both in select theaters and on other VOD platforms.

John Andreas Andersen, the director of the film, is also known for his work on the series Occupied (Okkupert), also available on Netflix. Before The Biggest Quake, the franchise was directed by Roar Uthaug, who later moved to Hollywood to direct the Tomb Raider adaptation with Alicia Vikander.

The story is set in Oslo, where the Eikjord family has moved following surviving the tsunami in the first film. The plot suggests that, 100 years following a devastating earthquake, the Norwegian capital once once more faces a major seismic threat.
