Meteo France placed the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and the Landes on red alert, Sunday January 9, due to the risk of flooding, a consequence of the heavy rainfall affecting the Pyrenees. According to the Vigicrues card, only one specific watercourse is concerned: the Gave d’Oloron. The Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne and Ariège are on orange alert “floods”, “rain-floods” and “avalanches”, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques are also on alert “rain-floods” and “avalanches”, and the Pyrénées-Orientales are only affected by the risk of avalanches.

The North and the Aisne are also still on “flood” orange vigilance. The route of the watercourses affected by the risk of flooding can be consulted on the Vigicrues website

Red vigilance signals a “risk of major flood” posing a “direct and generalized threat to the security of persons and property”, warns Vigicrues.

The Pyrenean departments face “an episode of heavy precipitation remarkable for its duration and the expected quantities”, precise Meteo France. The rains are expected to become more intense Sunday evening and overnight, and last until Monday followingnoon. The agency expects cumulative rainfall of up to 80 mm in 48 hours in the plains, and up to 250 mm locally in the mountains.

The risk of avalanches is at its maximum level, and of an observed intensity “on average once a year”, warns Météo France. Linked to the passage of snowfall to heavy rains, it is particularly important below 2000 m altitude, specifies the vigilance bulletin.
