What is the pursuit of happiness, that inalienable right of the American Declaration of Independence of 1776? Among the Starlings, a typical middle-class American family, it crystallizes around a vacation home on the shores of peaceful Lake Christopher in North Carolina. “A large, upgraded mobile home that the family affectionately calls their Cabin in the Woods.” The parents, Richard and Lisa, freshly retired academics, invite their 30-year-old children Michael and Thad, “lost and failed”, as well as their spouses every summer to spend a long weekend in this little corner of paradise, with good memories of a family happiness never altered until then.
