The secretly recorded tape on which the now deceased former justice section chief made allegations against the ÖVP is now prompting the authorities to take action. The Vienna public prosecutor’s office is currently investigating an initial suspicion against National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) for attempted abuse of office, an APA spokeswoman said on Thursday.
The allegations involve the recently deceased ex-section chief Christian Pilnacek speaking privately in a bar about the fact that Sobotka had accused him of never turning down investigations. The conversation from last summer was secretly recorded and made available to several media outlets in the past few days. The presidential spokesman had already rejected Pilnacek’s account on Tuesday.
The public prosecutor’s office is now examining whether proceedings should be initiated at all. The possible responsibility should also be clarified. It is possible, for example, that the Economic and Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) could also take over the case. A case was also opened against other unknown people who could be heard on the recording.
