The elections are on, are you going to poach anyone?

“It’s not really our habit. We are an anti-system party. We will have unionists on our lists. For the other parties, it is more normal because they have common ideas. »

Are you already in the field?

“We are carrying out a major survey to collect 100,000 questionnaires in the field, throughout Belgium. We have already exceeded 30,000 completed questionnaires, with around fifteen questions, also including local questions for our municipal programs. No other party can conduct so many quarter-hour discussions with citizens. »

An ambition for the municipalities?

“We want to break into an executive body, because we know that it will be more difficult at regional and federal levels. This is an important objective. »

The place of women at the PTB?

“More than ever, we have strong women around Sofie Merckx. Today, we are going towards 50-50 among our members in the new sections. »

A word on the place of workers in the party?

“We are the party of work, but we continue our efforts to ensure that workers gain access to internal and management bodies. We have provided for worker quotas. This enriches the debate. As president, this is a project that is close to my heart. »

Mandates with an indefinite duration or not?

“Everyone is free. Obviously, with us, there is no personal enrichment in the mandate of deputy. We only have activists working for us. »

Wars: “We must stop the hypocrisy of the West…”

What is your position ?

“The common point: we are entering a phase of great international instability in the capitalist world and it is always the worker who suffers first. The dangers of interimperialist war are growing as in 14-18 or 40-45, the dangers are accumulating because there are also China-USA tensions, tensions in South America… We really need to strengthen the peace movement . »

How are the two current wars (Ukraine and Gaza, editor’s note) different for you?

“They have a common point of double standards. I don’t understand why we rightly condemn Russia for bombing civilian populations and not condemn Netanyahu. This is the reason for the PTB’s abstentions. For me, we are not concerned with the question of human rights but, through geopolitics, with European and American imperialism. We receive a lot of support from the population. We must stop the hypocrisy of the West… all the people of the South realize this. »

So the PTB is not anti-Semitic?

” Of course not. I met representatives of Jewish left-wing associations… who are also against Israel’s policies today. Like them, I am not against the Jews but against this policy. On the other hand, at my level, I take a position against the colonial policy of the State of Israel. I will support the proposal against products from settlements, but it is not yet a sanction against the State of Israel. Parties like the MR which do not follow us… are therefore in favor of a colonial policy for Israel. »

As a dad, are you worried?

“Yes, we are aware that the world that will arrive for our children will be more unstable than the one in which we lived at the economic, climatic, social level… The ecological movement which is advancing for the moment will move towards more radicality, because that the problem is the society of overproduction. The economy always precedes war. Europe has everything to lose by following the American doctrine. We are already seeing this with the energy deal. »

A PTB activist cannot afford to be green (works, electric car, etc.)?

“We need a stronger public authority. Wallonia must release more resources for the population, because we have to put money on the table with a third-party payment system and attack entire neighborhoods. Public renovation companies will have to take charge of this renovation. Massive intervention by public authorities is required. »

A word on asylum policy?

“The first question is to understand the causes of conflicts. The Palestinians will arrive and most of the refugees come from Syria, Afghanistan… all countries that have been bombed. So it’s time to stop waging wars all over the world. Afterwards, we must provide a dignified and flexible reception for the refugees. There are times when there are more refugees than others (in summer…) but you have to be ready. »
