The lawsuit between Microsoft and the FTC for the takeover of Activision Blizzard is not without twists and turns which, however, have no relationship with the companies involved at first sight. So, a document used in the trial tells us what Microsoft thinks the PS5 Slim release period might be. It should be released within the year, and have the same price as the digital version of the PS5.
However, several things should be noted: as Frandroid reminds, we are not dealing with an official source here. Microsoft is relying here on a very specific informant, but not just any one, since it is the same source who revealed the launch of Project Q. A source which, at first sight, seems reliable, namely Tom Henderson.
Second, the name “Slim” is unlikely to actually be used. This was not the case with the PS4 either.
Still, creating a slimmer, cheaper mid-gen version of the PS5 has been a regular strategy at Sony for years. These templates eventually become the default version following a few years. And Microsoft’s use of Tom Henderson’s statements does indeed give a lot of credence to these rumors.
As a reminder, this argument comes as Microsoft wants to prove its position as an outsider in the field of video games, in order to deny the accusations of monopoly in the context of the acquisition of Activision. In this context, the tech giant has every interest in showing itself as the big loser in the console war.
