It’s almost the end of the PS5, announces a senior Sony official. The Japanese brand’s current flagship console only has three to four years left.

Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, Sony has sold approximately 46.6 million copies of its console. A new Slim model has been available on the market since November 2023. But at Sony, we are already thinking regarding the fin of life of the PS5while players are still hoping for a future Pro version.

Naomi Matsuoka, Sony’s senior vice president, shared more information regarding future plans for the company’s video game division. The senior official notably mentioned the future of the PlayStation 5.

« The final phase of its life cycle », these are the words that the American magazine Bloomberg reports. Although it’s not the end yet, it feels a little like it. Matsuoka thus confirms that the powerful Japanese console is beginning its end of cycle from the next fiscal year. This final phase will begin in next April.

End of the PS5 due to the gradual decline in sales

Although it may be surprising, the announcement makes perfect sense. Indeed, we must take into account the usual lifespan of Sony home consoles. In current conditions, it therefore seems likely that the manufacturer will launch the successor to the PS5 in 2027 or 2028.

Still according to the senior vice-president of the company, the console sales should start to slow down this year. This situation will then push Sony towards a strategy of balancing profitability and sales.

On the other hand, before the March 31 close of the fiscal year, Sony revised its sales forecasts downwards. The Japanese tech giant plans to only sell 21 million units instead of 25 million. At the same time, no major game of its large licenses is planned before avril 2025.

So the PS5 Pro?

There should therefore be no new releases for Spider-Manwhose second opus sold to more than 10 million copies. This is also true for The Last of Us et God of War. Death Strandingthe next creation of Hideo Kojima scheduled for next year, should not arrive until following April.

However, this won’t stop Sony from releasing new games with smaller licenses, such as Concord or Fairgame$. In addition, players can count on several exclusives from third-party publishers, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or Stellar Blade.

The end of the PS5 is over for Sony. On the other hand, rumors insist on the release of a new model of the console. The famous PS5 Prowhich gamers dream of, should offer improved performance, especially with more powerful CPUs and GPUs. But to date, the Japanese video game giant has not confirmed any of this information.
