The day following the arrest of Ousmane Sonko in Dakar, Senegal, the public prosecutor Abdoul Karim Diop clarified the charges once morest the opponent, Saturday, July 29, at a press conference.
“Il Ousmane [Sonko] will be prosecuted for calling for insurrection, association of criminals, endangering the security of the State, conspiracy once morest the authority of the State, acts and maneuvers to compromise public security and to create serious political disturbances, association of criminals in connection with a terrorist enterprise, but also theft.”
According to the prosecutor, the case of the mobile phone that Ousmane Sonko snatched from the hands of a gendarme on Friday is only the “trigger for his arrest” which was planned by the judicial authorities. Abdoul Karim Diop also listed several cases concerning Ousmane Sonko: that of the “commando”, “special forces” or even the “final fight”.
He also added that “Ousmane Sonko himself admitted having violently snatched the cell phone of a lady gendarme”.
Friday evening, a lawyer for Ousmane Sonko had described to the press as “childish” the accusations once morest his client. The Pastef party and the Yewwi Askan Wi coalition denounced this arrest, demanding the immediate release of Ousmane Sonko.
