The prose writer Danuta Kalinauskaita – the Grigorijus Kanovičius Prize Culture

The prose writer and essayist, whose biography includes many awards, was appreciated by this year’s commission for her novel, for her rich story about a journey to the past in an attempt to find traces of her tribe and to recover her personal history, for a skillfully played chess game between oblivion and memory, during which the birth of one person , the history of family, kindred like a mirror reflects the passage of time and the experience of Lithuanian society in the 19th and 20th centuries. and introspection tests determined by these experiences.

The novel “Whites against blacks” (Tyto alba, 2023) best met the evaluation criteria of the competition regulations among all the works submitted to the competition. This decision was made by the members of the commission that evaluated the works this year: chairman of the commission, associate professor of Vilnius University, historian, journalist, writer Aurim Švedas, researcher of Yiddish literature, translator and educator Goda Volbikė, and Giedrė Narbutaitė-Kontrimė, curator of the National Museum of the Jonava Cultural Center.

The following also applied to receive the annual Republican Grigorijus Kanovičius Literary Prize for a work of literary prose published in Lithuanian: Alvydas Šlepikas (“The House Across the River”), Rimantas Kmita, Povilas Vincentas Jankūnas (“The Journey”), Eimantas Gudas (“Blue Blood”), Zigmas Vitkus (“A moment to decide: the stories of Lithuanian Jewish rescuers”), Lolita Jolanta Piličiauskaitė (“The Puppet”).

​The annual republican Grigorijus Kanovičius Literary Award ceremony will take place today. m. September 12 at 5 p.m. in the public library of Jonavas Grigorijaus Kanovičius. During it, there will be a prize presentation to the laureate, a concert by the wonderful string duo “Duettissimo”. The exhibition “Stories and Memories of the Shtetl” by Inna and Michael Rogatchi (Finland) will also be presented during the event.
