«I presented this bill because anyone born or raised in Italy is Italian. Citizenship is a right that can no longer be denied to these daughters and sons of Italy”, this is the announcement on social media by MP Aboubakar Soumahoro, elected with the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra and currently in the Mixed group. «My bill, inspired by Article 3 of the Constitution, inserts the principle of ius soli for the children of foreign citizens which will be linked to the requirement of residence for at least one year by one of the parents, regardless of the formal residence”, explains the parliamentarian in a post on his Instagram profile.
Soumahoro’s proposal «establishes that ius soli must be applied to anyone born in Italy to a parent who was in turn born in Italy without any additional requirement, because it is a situation which in itself indicates the existence of an inseparable relationship with the territory”. The current law on citizenship, «in force for over 30 years, violates the principle of equality and freedom enshrined in the Constitution; changing it must be a priority. Just think that anyone born or raised here, due to this unjust and obsolete law, cannot participate in public competitions and the public life of the country; he cannot vote for his own representatives nor, obviously, get elected”, continues the deputy.
“Furthermore – he underlines – it is profoundly unfair that these fellow citizens of ours should be tied to their parents’ residence permit, risking, in the event of expiry or loss of their job, finding themselves in the absurd condition of being illegal immigrants in their own home”. Finally, «it is not right that they have to suffer limitations in their training path such as, for example, participating in national sports selections or a training experience abroad. For this reason, this bill of mine intends to remedy this injustice and put an end to the frustrations caused to Italians and Italians without citizenship who have the same needs, desires, dreams, expectations and aspirations as their companions. It would be a more just, plural, prosperous and open to the future Italy”, concludes Soumahoro.
