There have been claims in the UK that the country has become Muslim-dominated as a result of the widespread spread of Islam, and the Pakistani flag was flown over Westminster Abbey during the Christian religious festival of Easter.
When the fact was checked by the British media, it was found that the incident of hoisting the Pakistani flag at Westminster Abbey actually happened, but it is not what is being claimed.
Between March 27 and April 1, dozens of people posted a picture on British social media and claimed that the Pakistani flag was flying over the centuries-old church.
One post read: “Islamic Pakistan flag flying over Westminster Abbey during Easter week.”
Another social media user wrote, “Why is the Pakistani flag flying over Westminster Abbey on the holiest days of Christianity?” Is this evidence that we have fallen so far as a country that we cannot fly the Union Flag?”
After these claims, the British news agency Reuters started a fact check on the matter.
A spokesman for Westminster Abbey told Reuters that the Pakistani flag was certainly flown at the church, but it was for Pakistan Day.
The spokesman said that it is a 50-year-old tradition in which a representative of the Pakistani High Commission is invited and the Pakistani flag is hoisted at Westminster Abbey on Pakistan Day.
According to the spokesman, the Pakistani flag was hoisted on March 22, while the Easter week started from March 24 and continued until Easter on March 30. Throughout this week, St. Peter’s flag has been flown over Westminster Abbey.
