The Promising Future of the Flemish Economy: Outperforming Brussels and Wallonia

2023-07-18 08:13:00

In the years to come, the Flemish economy will experience faster growth than that of Brussels and Wallonia, project the Federal Planning Bureau and the regional statistical offices.

While the Flemish economy has been less affected than that of Wallonia and Brussels during past health and energy crises, this is expected to remain the case in the years to come. In the economic forecasts drawn up by the Federal Planning Bureau, Flemish Statistics, the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis and the Walloon Institute for Evaluation, Forecasting and Statistics, an average growth of 1. 6% per year is assumed per year, for Flanders in the period 2024-2028. The average growth in Wallonia and Brussels would amount respectively to 1.3 and 1.1% for this period.

Also this year, Flemish economic growth (1.4%) should be higher than that of Wallonia (0.9%) and Brussels (1.3%). The higher growth in Flanders in the coming years is attributed to a higher contribution from market services and higher growth from industry.
