Relatives of the crew members of the ARA San Juan Submarine celebrated with emotion the half-sanction in the Chamber of Deputies of the project that establishes the “National Day in memory of the 44 heroes of the ARA San Juan Submarine.” This day will be commemorated every November 15 in honor of the submariners who lost their lives in the tragic incident of the ARA San Juan.
Luis Tagliapietra, father of one of the crew members who died in the tragedy, expressed his joy and the desire that the procedure be approved quickly in the Senate so that it is not delayed until next year. «It was unexpected news, the truth is I thought it was not going to come out, following so much struggle, because this took a long time, a job of many years.«Tagliapietra shared in statements to Télam.
The ARA San Juan disappeared on November 15, 2017, with 44 crew members on board, and the remains of the submarine They were not found until 368 days following the search began. The tragedy shocked the entire country and marked deep pain for the families of the submariners.
Tagliapietra, whose son Alejandro was 27 years old at the time of the ship’s disappearance, pointed out the importance of keeping the memory of the heroes of the ARA San Juan alive. “It is essential to remember them because although there was a resolution from a few years ago that spoke of the treatment of the issue in schools, sometimes it was fulfilled and other times it was not,” he claimed.
«This will give another framework so that they can be formally remembered and honored. We family members never ask for more than that: memory, truth and justice«he emphasized.
The bill, which will now go to the Senate for evaluation and possible approval, establishes in its article 1: “Institute November 15 of each year as National Day in memory of the 44 heroes of the ARA San Juan Submarine.” In the second article, it is specified that during that day, «“The National Executive Branch, through the enforcement authority it determines, will promote the carrying out of commemorative actions and activities.”
This measure seeks to honor the submariners and keep alive the memory of the tragedy that moved the entire country. The approval of this law was considered by the victims’ relatives as ““a significant step on the path towards justice and recognition for those who lost their lives serving their country.”
The approval of this law was not the only celebration in the Chamber of Deputies, since the project to declare June 17 as the “National Day of Workers Missing at Sea” was also approved. This date honors the victims of the sinking of the ship Repunte and all those who lost their lives in tragedies while carrying out their work at sea.
In addition, other important initiatives were approved, such as the reaffirmation and defense of the sovereign rights of the Argentine Sea, the declaration of August 4 as «DDay of the Rights of Sovereignty over the Continental Shelf”, and the designation of October 31 as the “Day of the Evangelical and Protestant Churches”.
