The Professionalism of Police Forces in Africa: Afrobarometer Survey Reveals Rankings

In many African countries, the police are often criticized for their lack of professionalism despite the enormous work observed on the ground.

In Benin, Togo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast as in many other states, the police intervene on a daily basis.

In order to inquire about citizens’ perceptions of the police in their respective countries, Afrobarometer conducted a survey to reveal the professional police forces in Africa.

To carry out its study, the polling institute relied on data collected from citizens of 39 African countries for the year 2023.

According to the initiators of this investigation, “the questionnaire addresses several aspects, including professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights”.

Do the police act professionally and respect the rights of all citizens? These are the two questions asked to citizens during this survey.

According to the ranking revealed, Burkina Faso finds itself in 1st place.

It is followed by Morocco (2nd) and Niger (3rd). Next comes in 4th place, Benin. Mali closes the top 5 of this prestigious ranking.

According to Afrobarometer, only in six countries (out of 39) do at least half of the citizens surveyed think that the Police generally act professionally.

These are: Burkina Faso (58%), Morocco (57%), Niger (55%), Benin (54%), Mali (54%) and Senegal (50%).
