The princess wedding: Touching and different – and partly hidden

An hour into overtime, Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett gave each other their yes, after a wedding ceremony that was described by the guests as very moving.

– Tears flowed on most people. I don’t know if I have any make-up left, a festively dressed Bendriss tells NTB after the wedding.

– It was beautiful, solemn and filled with lots of happiness and joy, she says.

The many international guests at the princess wedding made the experience extra special, says Bendriss, who has known the bride himself for a number of years.

Cultural breadth

Several of the guests praised the wedding celebration for the diversity of participants, content and execution. Already on the way up the red carpet, it was clear that this was a meeting between different cultures. There were many Norwegian guests, including several members of the royal family, who attended the wedding. The contrast was great with the sometimes very colorful outfits and style of the American guests.

Very little was known in advance about the ceremony in the tent at Vinjevollen, apart from the fact that parish priest Margit Lovise Holte was to perform the wedding, with assistance from the American celebrity pastor Michael Beckwith.

Afterwards, the artist Björg Thorhallsdottir stated that it was a dignified and beautiful wedding, with a wonderful breadth, from joik to the performance of Amazing grace.

Hidden under a canvas and in a tent

The guests waited a long time for the bride, who thus arrived at the tent almost an hour overtime, hidden by a sea of white tablecloths. You could still get a small glimpse of the bride in an opening in the cloth, in TV 2’s live broadcast.

Märtha Louise was dressed in a traditional white wedding dress, wearing a diadem, which according to royal expert Trond Norén Isaksen is her own. Durek Verrett, on the other hand, was wearing a black tuxedo. Celebrity stylist Jan Thomas, who has styled the princess’s hair, also came out of the curtain. TV 2’s pictures showed that it was Maud Angelica who led her mother into the tent.

– Märtha was so beautiful when she entered, and it was powerful to see her go down with Maud by her side, said Thorhallsdottir.

The bride and groom have sold the rights to cover the wedding exclusively to the British weekly Hello! Magazine. As a result, the Norwegian press does not have access to the wedding itself or the festivities afterwards.

The press had to settle for photographing the session from the outside, from a long distance, but managed to catch small glimpses, such as the groom getting a good hug from both King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon on the way in.

Ready to party

After the two had mutually agreed, the guests eventually came out of the tent at Vinjevollen. No less than 350 people are on the guest list in Geiranger on Saturday.

The members of the Norwegian royal family came out first, followed by their royal counterparts from Sweden and the Netherlands. They waved to everyone present, before entering a separate side entrance to the Hote Union, where the wedding party continues.

According to the programme, the stage is set for afternoon tea in the garden or foyer at the Union hotel, before drinks are served at 5.30pm. It probably gives those who want it the opportunity to change from, for example, bunad to gala.

Dinner starts at 18.30.

– Everything is going according to plan

Large police resources have been deployed during the wedding celebration, which has over 350 people on the guest list.

– The event is somewhat delayed, but everything has gone according to plan, and there are no unwanted incidents, says operations manager Sindre Molnes in Møre og Romsdal police district to NTB.

The police were on an inspection in Geiranger earlier this month to plan the security arrangements around the celebration.

– Security is planned with the resources required for an event of this size, says Molnes.
