The Prime Minister has given a period of fourteen days to start the actual work

Prime Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni visited the province of Rumonge on Thursday August 11, 2022. The objective was to assess the state of progress of the rehabilitation of national road no. 3, Rumonge – Nyanza-lac section, of 52 km and whose contractual period is 24 months. The Prime Minister regretted a nine-month delay and gave a fourteen-day ultimatum so that by August 25, 2022 the actual work might start.

The three components must collaborate to clear the challenges relating to the validation of the pending studies”, recommended the Prime Minister. These three components which must collaborate are the Chico company in charge of the execution of the works, the surveillance company and the Road Agency of Burundi.

In a meeting that the Prime Minister held with representatives of these three components, in the presence of the ministers in charge of finance and infrastructure, the administrative authorities of the provinces of Rumonge and Makamba, the participants mentioned certain challenges that handicap these works.

These include, for example, the insufficiency observed in the studies already carried out, the lack of hydraulic and hydrological studies and the stability of the slopes. There is also the delay or refusal of approval of the technical files of the project by the representative of the group called Aeco/Cobuco. About all these challenges, the Prime Minister was very clear: “You must come together to validate the studies already available”.

Regarding compensation, Mr. Bunyoni recommended that the administrative authorities get involved and collaborate with the Chico company and check whether all those likely to be compensated receive their share. He also indicated that this compensation is calculated by referring to the new law. The beneficiaries must, for their part, affix their signatures to the minutes attesting to having received this compensation.

The cost of the rehabilitation and widening of the road, Rumonge – Nyanza-Lac section and related works is 81,407,046,233 Burundian francs and the estimated deadline for the end of the works is set for September 1, 2023.
