“The price of milk is disproportionate to the effort”

“Reasonable remuneration” for local dairy farmers: This is what Josef Moosbrugger, President of the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture (LK), and LK Tyrol President Josef Hechenberger called for yesterday in a broadcast. They argue that there is cost pressure on fuels and animal health and increasing production requirements. These expenses would have to be compensated, which is why dairies are being asked to raise producer prices to a level that reflects costs.

Kärntnermilch boss Helmut Petschar, President of the Association of Austrian Milk Processors (VÖM), shows a basic understanding of the dairy farmers: The milk price is currently around 47 cents, last year it was on average over 50 cents, which also has to do with the situation on the world market as well as a certain reticence, even with higher-priced products.

The majority of dairies are organized cooperatively – “what is earned is passed on. But we also have to deal with increased costs, especially for energy and personnel.” When it comes to the development of the milk price, a lot depends on the reaction of retailers.
