Gas is cheaper here than in neighboring countries. It is a study commissioned by the regulators which shows it. Belgians therefore pay less than the inhabitants of neighboring countries, in particular thanks to the measures taken by the government. However, the ranking might change.
At the start of the crisis, the price of energy in Belgium was higher than in our neighbours. But a few months later, the situation changed. According to a study commissioned by regulators, Belgian households currently pay less for gas than in France or the Netherlands:
“VAT was reduced for electricity in March 2022 and for gas in April 2022, we went from 21 to 6%”assures Anne-Elisabeth Sprimont, adviser to the socio-economic and tariff management, Walloon commission for energy. “What we see mainly in this report at the price level is that the impact of VAT has greatly reduced electricity prices for Belgian households.”
Good news but a ranking that is still likely to evolve. The special excise duty in Belgium increased last month: this excise will partially compensate for the shortfall due to the reduction in VAT, which risks increasing energy bills…
At the beginning of 2023, Belgian households with an average income spent around 6.7% of their income on energy bills.
