Last month, the inflation rate of bottled water was the highest in 11 years.
According to data from the National Statistical Office, the consumer price index for bottled water last month was 112.09, up 10.8% from the same period last year.
This is the highest in 11 years since June 2012 (11.6%).
Record-high bottled water inflation was driven by higher prices for key bottled water products.
In February of this year, the Jeju Island Development Corporation raised the factory price of Jeju Samdasoo, the No. 1 bottled water market share, by an average of 9.8%.
Isis, which has the second largest share in the bottled water market following Jeju Samdasoo, has also increased its factory price by an average of 8.4% since December of last year.
In addition, some convenience stores also raised the price of their own brand bottled water by 100 to 200 won from April, and also raised the price of imported bottled water.
For processed foods, even if the factory price increases, it takes time for existing stocks to be exhausted first, and the price effect usually appears following regarding 3 to 4 months, so bottled water prices may increase even following July.
