“The Pressure of Local Politics and Social Issues: The Story of Ginette Fabritius”

Experience in the field and strong sensitivity to social issues were not enough to keep Ginette Fabritius as president of the Malmedy CPAS. After four years of involvement and six months of sick leave, she has just given up her place, feeling, according to her, “exhausted and no longer able to honor the function of president”.

For this political neophyte and medical secretary, elected in 2018 without a political label, the disillusion is real. The fault of a term of office jostled, on the one hand, by the Covid crisis and the management of the virus in retirement homes and, on the other, by the arrival of a hundred Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion . “On these issues, I have been under pressure from all sides and especially from the political milieu with an opposition that is not always constructive”, laments Ginette Fabritius, who admits: “I was naive, I frankly believed that at the local level, we worked together for the good of the citizens”.

According to her, social networks have their share of responsibility in this deleterious atmosphere. “With each decision, I instantly received feedback on my way of doing things. Some spend their time commenting on issues without knowing the ins and outs.”

Disgusted, Ginette Fabritius will end her term as social action advisor but will not run once more in 2024, preferring to return to the field to continue her volunteer missions in retirement homes.
