The Presidential Council leads an expanded meeting to follow up on the situation in the city of Al-Zawiya

In his capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Army, the Presidential Council assigned the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Muhammad al-Haddad, to develop an urgent plan to combat crime and lawlessness and improve the living and security situation in Zawiya, with the full support of the National Unity Government.

This came during a meeting in the office of the Presidential Council in Tripoli, which included the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army, the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, the two chiefs of the general staff, the General Intelligence Service, a number of chiefs of staff, a number of military and security leaders from the city of Zawiya, representatives of the civil movement, dignitaries and social leaders. In the city, in order to follow up on the security situation in the municipality of Zawiya.

The Council instructed the Chief of Staff to form a security team of military leaders from the city’s residents to implement an urgent plan to improve security.

In turn, the Chief of Staff briefed the Supreme Commander on his visit to the city, his meetings, and the features of the security solution adopted. Representatives of the civil movement and their demands were also heard, who stressed the need to deal with, treat, and address the causes of the security deterioration completely and immediately.

The Presidential Council stressed the Council’s full support for everything that achieves an immediate response and the immediate start of work to implement the protesters’ demands and improve the security of the city and all parts of Libya.

Al-Zawiya witnessed popular protests during the past few days and the closure of the main roads and some of the city’s institutions, in protest against the deteriorating security situation in the city.

The state of popular anger came against the background of the circulation of videos showing the torture of citizens in the city.

It is noteworthy that the city recently witnessed armed clashes that led to the killing of two civilians, and the displacement of a number of families from their homes, according to local sources from the city.
