After its participation in the Great Exhibition of Made in France organized at the Elysée, the specialist in industrial 3D printing, Cosmyx, was chosen by the Presidency of the Republic for the design of 16 3D chess pieces representing the The so-called “Charlemagne” chessboard.
Long considered a present from the caliph Haroun al-Rashid to Charlemagne on the occasion of his coronation, the so-called “Charlemagne” chessboard actually dates from the end of the 11th century and perhaps came from a workshop of Southern Italy. The 3D printed replicas of its heavy ivory pieces with spectacular dimensions – more than 15 cm high for kings – were offered as a diplomatic gift during the national holiday on July 14 by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron to the Prime Indian Minister Narendra Modí, great fan of chess games.

The 16 replicas were manufactured using Cosmyx’s Mira industrial 3D printing micro-factory. To obtain a rendering close to the original version, the parts were printed in ColorFabb Bronze filament, a formulation of PLA/PHA loaded with bronze. A hand patina was made on each piece for a perfect finish. It takes 4 hours to 14 hours of printing depending on the pieces, without the patina. The original of this ceremonial chessboard is currently kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, in Paris.
