Less than ten years from the opening of the Brisbane 2032 Summer Games, the President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) intends to put pressure on the government authorities so that they agree to an increase in investments in favor of the sport and the preparation of Australian athletes.

Dn a statement delivered at the AOC’s Annual General Meeting, Ian Chesterman issued what might be described as an ultimatum to the federal government.

So that exposed it the President of the Australian Olympic body:

It is clearly understood that successful Home Games require a successful Home Team. But time is running out, and the tension within the system is showing.

We’re coming off of a hugely successful Tokyo Games, but that was nearly two years ago, and the system that helped produce that performance is understandably struggling.

Everything increases, except the funds to manage sports programs.

Results don’t just happen. If Australia is to have a successful team at Brisbane 2032, the system and people who got us to success in Tokyo must be supported now..

Through this statement, the successor to John Coates at the head of the AOC is asking for no more and no less than increased government funding for sport, particularly in the high-level segment, so that the future Australian delegation can perform up to the ambitions that will be set for it in view of the 2032 Olympics.

This appeal to the attention of the federal authorities is understood in the light of economic inflation, the effects of which are already penalizing Australian athletes, particularly in the run-up to the Paris 2024 Games, an edition which will will take place 15,000 kilometers from Australia, with all that implies in terms of costs.

Apart from the efforts to be made in the area of sport, the Australian Federal Government committed earlier this year to a framework agreement with the Queensland government to ensure co-funding of the Brisbane 2032 venues.

With this institutional cooperation, the Canberra authorities will provide some 3.44 billion Australian dollars (2.12 billion euros), including 2.5 billion directed towards the Brisbane Arena construction site and the surroundings of this future multifunctional venue with 17,000 seats (1.54 billion euros).

This contribution will therefore be added to the investment promised by the authorities of the State of Queensland which, for their part, will provide 3.63 billion dollars (2.24 billion euros), including 2.7 billion for the requalification of Gabba Stadium and the neighborhood adjacent to the future Olympic Stadium for the 2032 Olympics (1.66 billion euros).
