Three months following announcing his country’s candidacy to host the 2036 Summer Games, the President of the Republic of Poland visited the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the beginning of the week as well as the Olympic Museum in Lausanne (Switzerland).

The President of the Polish Republic, Andrzej Duda, indeed met the President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, in the company of Maja Włoszczowska, Olympic mountain bike champion, double Olympic silver medalist and now member of the IOC, as well as Radosław Piesiewicz, newly elected to head of the Polish Olympic Committee and who, as such, had the opportunity to submit the letter of intent formalizing the country’s candidacy at the beginning of October.
From Olympic House, leaders discussed the prospect of the Paris 2024 Summer Games, a few weeks following the adoption of the Olympic Truce by a majority of United Nations (UN) member states.
The opportunity also for President Andrzej Duda and Thomas Bach to take stock of the current geopolitical situation, particularly in light of the conflict between Russia and Ukrainea country with which Poland shares borders.
In this spirit, the leader Polish man thanked his host in particular for the welcome provided in Lausanne, declaring in the IOC Golden Book:
I wish you success in promoting the values of the Olympic Movement so that the Olympic Games remain a symbol of peace and mutual respect in the spirit of the Olympic Charter.
The presidential visit then continued a short distance away, to the Olympic Museum overlooking Lake Geneva, from where the IOC President was able to present to Andrzej Duda objects donated by Polish Olympic athletes in recent years.
During this trip to Swiss territory, Andrzej Duda also had the opportunity to address the question of the candidacy for the organization of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2036, as informed by the service of communication of the Polish Presidency.
Last September, the President had made it a point of honor to seal the country’s ambition which, during the summer of 2023, successfully hosted the European Games and a contingent of nearly 7,000 athletes from 48 countries.
Taking advantage of a visit to Zakopane, on the sidelines of the European Congress of Sport and Tourism, Andrzej Duda particularly mentioned the reasons which led Poland to study the conditions for a new candidacy, following the failure of Krakow 2022, swept out of the race for the Winter Olympics following a referendum campaign.
As the President of the Republic then expressed:
EURO 2012 football, which took place in Poland and Ukraine, was a very important and revolutionary sporting event for us.
This is why we are committed to organizing this year’s European Games, not only in one sport, which is football, but more broadly in various sporting disciplines. They were also a successful event.
All this has pushed us – taking into account the advanced investment plans in our country – to make efforts to organize the largest sporting event in the world, namely the Summer Olympic Games.
I would like to announce from here, following consultations we have had with the Polish Olympic Committee, with the Minister of Sports and his government, that our ambition and intention is to launch efforts to organize the Summer Olympic Games. The Games in our country in 2036.
