“The President considers the decision of the military commander to rent an apartment from his son for rent as a mistake,” the Presidency said in a comment to BNS on Tuesday.
According to the Presidency, V. Rupšys admitted the mistake and must correct it.
“Immediately after that, the Commander of the Army should return to important defense issues: the development of the Lithuanian army, its modernization, the implementation of NATO’s regional defense plans, the readiness to receive several thousand allied forces,” the Presidency said.
News portal 15min announced that the commander of the army, General V. Rupšys receives the so-called housing allowance of almost half a thousand euros every month, for which he rents an apartment in Vilnius from his son.
After publishing this publication, he announced that he had terminated the lease agreement with his son, although he said that he did not see a conflict of interest.
The army commander used the opportunity to receive housing allowances amounting to 445 euros, which is available to every Lithuanian soldier who does not own real estate in the area where he is serving. V. Rupšys owns property in Ignalina district.
V. Rupšys was appointed commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in July 2019.
