The Presidency proposes to change the procedure for appointing ambassadors carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

“Let’s take the procedure for appointing judges of the Supreme Court – there is an open competition, everyone can apply. The Council of Judges, as the equivalent of the attestation commission MFA, evaluates, ranks in a certain sense and submits the entire list to the president,” Frederiks Janson, the president’s chief adviser, told Žiniai Radio on Tuesday morning.

“I think that such a system in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would benefit everyone and would be much more transparent, much simpler, there would be much less doubt regarding what influences the choice of one or another surname that is brought to the president,” he added.

The presidency proposes changes amid continuing disagreements over the appointment of the Lithuanian ambassador to Poland.

The chancellor of the Presidency wrote to the chancellor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, requesting to submit to President Gitanas Nausėdas documentation regarding the selection contests conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of candidates for the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic missions, including the embassy in Poland, presidential adviser Ridas Jasilionis informed BNS on Tuesday evening.

According to F. Janson, now, during the selection of ambassadors by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the list of its participants is not presented to the president.

“Selection, of course, should and might be improved,” he said.

At the end of December, F. Janson said that the dispute over the appointment of new ambassadors arose because the clan of “statesmen” is trying to seize important positions.

The so-called clan of statesmen was reported to the National Security and Defense Committee of the Seimas in 2006 during a parliamentary investigation into the activities of the State Security Department.

“Statesmen” is informally called a group of civil servants and officials who may have had an impact beyond their powers on the most important political and economic processes in Lithuania.

Those in power claim that the accusations of the Presidency are unfounded and recall the work of F. Jansons in the “Respublikas” group of publications.

At that time, it was closely associated with the presidential election campaign of Roland Paks, which took place two decades ago, and F. Janson worked there for more than a decade until 2004, he was the editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper at that time.

Those in power warn that the presidential adviser’s statements show that G. Nausėda’s 2024 presidential election campaign may be permeated with a similar supra-systemic approach.

Lithuanian Ambassador to Poland Eduardas Borisovas was recalled from his position following the end of his term of office on September 7, 2023, the embassy is currently headed by Minister Plenipotentiary Audronė Markevičienė.

G. Nausėda said that he does not emphasize the stalled appointment of the ambassador to Poland and urges him not to stir up excitement in an even place.
