The presence of tiger mosquitoes in February worries in the PACA region

From this month of February, the PACA region is undergoing an upsurge of tiger mosquitoes and in particular a increased health risk due to the risk of dengue. Winter is supposed to be the period when mosquitoes are not a problem, yet in certain regions, notably the Var, they are already present (source 1).

Given the climatic conditions of recent months, mosquitoes have all the necessary conditions to develop, even in the middle of winter. Specialists like Sergio Giglio, an urban entomologist, have had to intervene in crawl spaces to reduce the presence of mosquito larvae and limit health risk coming. In addition to nuisance and bites, the increase in the population of tiger mosquitoes and their ability to adapt can lead to dengue fever spreadas known in the summer of 2022. When a case of dengue fever is detected, the ARS mobilizes mosquito control teams to treat the surrounding 150 meters around the infected person. Dengue fever has the main symptoms of fever, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, joint pain also. Its incubation time ranges from 2 days to a week. In particular, it can lead to a rash similar to measles. A lull can be observed following a few days and then a worsening occurs with conjunctival hemorrhages, nosebleeds or bruising. Disappearance of illness and recovery may take up to two full weeks (source 2).

Individually, it is recommended to remove areas of standing water and cover those that might not be.
