The President of Nigeria, newly elected President of ECOWAS, proclaimed it loud and clear: “We will no longer tolerate military coups”. According to him, the era of colonels’ putsches was over. And then unfortunately, a few weeks later in Niger, twice once more, soldiers deposed the elected president Mohamed Bazoum and took power, or rather usurped it.
Suddenly, ECOWAS showed its muscles and teeth by introducing financial measures once morest the new regime and warned that concerted action by several West African countries might form an armed coalition and restore President Bazoum in its legitimacy.

The world held its breath at the idea that Nigeriens, Ivorians and Senegalese would arrive with weapons and luggage in Niamey, to reinstate the lost democracy and force a return to the law. Then we discovered that the
Nigerian senators were hostile to such an expedition and that in other countries public opinion was also unfavorable to a military adventure in a sister country.
Since then, it has been radio silence. Worse, Gabon, in turn, the very day following the contested re-election of Ali Bongo saw a general, head of the presidential guard, overthrow the newly reappointed head of state.

What does ECOWAS say regarding this new coup? Nothing ! His big statements made people pshitt.
Now with Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Gabon and Chad, there are six West African countries which are under the rule of military putschists. Whose turn is it, what will be next?

Thus, ECOWAS has once once more shown its impotence, its inability to act and through its inaction has opened the door to new
unconstitutional upheavals in its sphere of influence.
Poor ECOWAS!
