A woman from Shanghai became famous in her home country for touting the physical and psychological benefits of tree hugging.
Kishchichi hugged her first tree in April, while on the go with her husband. Feeling a little euphoric, the woman hugged a random tree on a Shanghai street and immediately felt positive effects. A constant ringing in the ears that she claimed was caused by work-related stress “magically disappeared” while cuddling the tree’s thick trunk, and this “wonderful” first experience motivated her not only to look for other trees to hug but also to share her story with others so that they might benefit from it too.
In a post on Xiaoshomgshu, the Chinese version of Instagram, Qishishiqi said she felt relaxed and healed following cuddling with a thousand-year-old tree in a forest park near Shanghai, adding that it felt like “the tree was embracing me.” Help ease all the burdens she was carrying.
The Chinese woman explained that she always felt nervous when embracing other humans, fearing that they might not handle her negative energy, but the trees were completely different, as in her words, “they will listen to you silently and patiently.”
Qishishi has made it clear that she does not recommend substituting tree hugging for actual medical treatment, but proponents of traditional Chinese medicine claim that tree hugging is good for both physical and mental health. Apparently, by cuddling with trees, people can gain Qi, which helps them tune in to their emotions, according to odditycentral.
Dr. Stone Croucher, a clinical psychologist known as “The Hug Doctor,” claims that people who hug each other for at least 21 seconds benefit from an increased release of oxytocin. But he’s not sure that applies to tree hugging or not.
