Ramallah – the world of the homeland
Scientists have found that two cups of tea can help protect memory, health and organs as you age, because chemicals naturally found in tea, called flavanols, boost brain power.
The experts concluded following studying how flavanols – antioxidants found in many vegetables and fruits, such as apples and berries, as well as in tea – affected the memory of more than 3,500 people over the age of 60.
During the three-year study, participants were given word-recall tasks to test their memory.
Professor Gunther Kunll, from the University of Reading, said drinking tea was the “easiest way” to increase flavanol intake.
Meanwhile, Dr. Scott Small, from Columbia University in the US, said that age-related memory loss varies between people.
“If this was due to differences in flavanol consumption, we would see significant improvement in people replenishing flavanols in their 40s and 50s,” he said.
Plants contain more than 5,000 flavonoid compounds, which play roles in producing cell growth, combating environmental stress and attracting insects for pollination. There are also other health benefits of tea.
Scientists said that drinking green tea can help prevent arthritis.
And researchers at the University of Sheffield in 2003 found that two compounds found in green tea can help prevent osteoporosis by blocking an enzyme that destroys cartilage.
Contrary to popular belief, drinking green tea may also help prevent tooth decay.
A study conducted at the University of Illinois in the United States of America showed that the bacteria in the teeth stopped growing when people washed their mouths with black tea five times for 30 seconds over a period of 15 minutes, as the components of the polyphenols present in the tea fight dental plaque.
